hmmm, i cant imagine something blocking the radiator, but i'll check.
i just had the lower hose changed about a month or so ago. i believe this condition existed before that though. so the hose is new. didnt have the spring inside but it was from napa and pretty sturdy seemed.

I had the same problem on my 79 TA. would run cool unless i raced anyone or kept the rpms at 2800 or above. I could drive 50 miles without a problem if i went the speed limit. It was that way for a while. Ended up being a bad surface job that a machine shop did. A friend of mine had that Hydro carbon test kit(not sure of the proper name). You put it on in place of the rad. cap and it changes colors if you have a leaking head gasket.

My 86 has a pretty short air dam, and it was rolling back at the bottom. I ran really hot at 45 mph. I bolted a slightly longer one over the original and it helped a lot. I used one off a S-10 pickup. Total cost for air dam from junk yard and bolts was $7. It even has bracing on the back side at the b ottom edge to make it stiffer. If all else fails, itwon't costmuchto try it.
