Fan satys on when car is off? Batt goes dead.

My buddy has a 92's RS that has cooling problems. He has installed a new radiator, water pump, and thermostat within 50k miles.

He had a prob where his fan was staying on and not turning off, or not turning on at all and making his car overheat.

I replaced the fan switch for him that goes into the block, he said it was fine until when a week later he was in the drive thru and it overheated.

Last night we went to autozone and got a new relay and a temperature switch ( the one that goes in the intake manifold) and as soon as I connected jumper cables, the fan would come on.

Any ideas of what is going on here, I un-hooked the relay and that did nothing, I unhooked the temperature sensor and that did nothing. I could not reach the fan switch and it was dark do we called it a night.

It must be the fan switch right? I haven't heard of a fan staying on when the car is off though. I always thought that it went off when you shut the car down, even if the switch is grounded because it reached the proper temperature for colling.

are you sure you replced the right relay?, try unplugging the relays under the hood untill the fan goes off, it should be one by the brake booster, so start there

Dave's right, if you pulled the right relay the fan should shut off unless someone hardwired the fan. When the relay contacts start to go the can sometimes weld themselves together causing the fan to continue to run. Ditto for it not turning on, they are notorious for being intermittent.

Ok.

Are you guys sure on the placement of the relay? It's by the brake booster? On TBI's? I thought it was on the passenger's side on the AC cover. If you guys do have TBI vehicles, I'll take your word for it.

Edit: I guess I thought wrong. That's the Blower motor relay. So the fan relay is on the drovers side near the brake booster?

Fixed it.

Changed the relay and it's fixed. The old relay had a short and when I pulled the harness off there was black dust in there cause it shorted out and got too hot.
