once a week...wtf?
This is very strange, My car will run perfect for about a week and the usually it seems to be Friday almost everytime it will get really hot...the whole cooling system has been replaced when I rebuilt the motor about 5k miles ago. new water pump, rad. 160 stat etc..All week it has ran 180 and not moved, now this morning when I was going to school it went to 240!? Im about to drive this damn car off a cliff, I love it but it just won't give up. I am stumped to as why it is doing this.....yes the air damn is intact, the electrical fans work good, I have a mech. temp gauge so its not the gauge.
...btw the fans are hooked up to a switch that I turn on when I turn the car on. And the heater core is bypassed.

When your car is cold, take the radiator cap off & let the car get to the point where water is bubbling out of the radiator. You just might have some air trapped within the cooling system.
I had the same problem, and it only came back to haunt me once or twice a week.

thanks guys, it ended up being the heater core....yes I was loosing coolant, I thought I had a cracked head which would not be good, but I bypassed the heater core and everything has stayed where its supposed to know...we have already had a couple 100* days here and it struggles to go over 180
yah. temperature sux in az. 103f today i think. my car overheats if the a/c is on. no matter what i do. i bought hi-perf. water pump, 180 stat, dual fans always on, new radiator.
i have jus learned to deal with the heat.
wish i could fix it.

Have you tried a big aftermarket radiator like a Griffin or Be Cool? The Griffin sure made a difference for me, but S. Fl. never gets as hot as AZ...

I bought the Griffin 31 x 19 universal GM from summit for $190. The Be Cool unit lists for about $450 or more in Summit and Jegs catalogs. The Griffin takes a little work to install, but only about an afternoon's worth of work. From what I understand, the Be Cool is a direct fit radiator.

Yeah, that happened to me once. I just took off all of the heater hoses and plugged the manifold. Not like I ever used the stupid thing anyway...

Its not the worst heater core in the world, but it does take some patience. A couple of long extensions, swivel sockets, and a good flashlight really help. Oh yeah, does your back bend backwards or do your arms bend in 6 places? Didn't think so. Well, you can access it from the pass. side foot well, but it is annoying. I wish I could give you more advice but it is a straight forward job, just in a bitch of spot. If you have a service manual read what it says to do and you will figure it out. Sorry to not be more helpful...
