Lowered car = running hot??? Need help.
Lowered car = running hot??? Need help.
I just lowered my car, its pretty low with the air dam about 3 inches off the ground. I noticed the last couple of days my temp gauge is climbing to about 220 and staying there. I have the fan on all the time. In traffic it will climb a couple more lines. Just got a few questions.
First, is it bad to be running this hot? The car used to run at about 180. Would it being lower to the ground effect this. I notice a loss of power after the temp gets to this point.
Second, I have no coolent reservoir, and when I turn the car off, coolant comes rushing out of the overflow tube. ( Im going to get a reservoir), but is this normal?? Cap maybe??
Third, would a dual fan setup running all the time cool better than the one single fan. And does anyone recommend any setups?
By the way, im running a 160 stat. and its a midly modded 350, 350HP. No A/C.
Thanks in advance. - Joe

Sounds like a bad T-stat maybe, as with a 160 stat, it should never go that high. That is where I would start anyway. HTH's

Get an overflow tank, you need it to catch the overflow. Then when the engine cools it will be sucked back in. Replace the cap, it's often overlooked. Running a 160 stat doesn't mean you will run any cooler--that is the minimum temp of the engine. That being said, replace it if it's very old. Running that hot (220) isn't a problem--that's normally when the fan kicks on stock. What guage are you using? The stock guages aren't very accurate. Lowering your car isn't going to increase the temp. How new is the fan motor? Could be a weak motor not pulling enough air. Dual fan will pull more air. A better water pump would help too.
Thanks for the info. I put in a new stat, with a couple holes drilled in it, and it stays a little under 220 now. I still have the stock single electric fan fron an 86 on there, so Im going to order a dual electric setup tonight, along with one of those nice recovery tanks. I think that will help. One thing I was thinking of doing was to just take the stat apart and just put in the plate with the hole in it. Im gonna try hooking up my other gauge to see if the stock gauge is right too. Thanks again - joe
