fan switch melted

The other day my fan switch overheated and fried out of nowhere. Even now when I jump the wires togather they get hot. What caused the switch to suddenly go? Why are the wires getting so warm? I had this switch in for a while now with noe problems. The only electrical work I did was replace an alternator.

Thanks

Matt

did you have the switch connected directly to the fan, or through a relay?, if it was directly connected, most switches cant handle that big of a load that a electric radiator fan needs

Directly to the fan. I didn't do the wiring myself. It was done before I bought the car. I was thinking of putting a relay in, but I don't know how I should wire it in. I put in a new 50 amp switch. Hopefully that will hold out some till I figure out what to do. I have a 30 amp fuse inbetween the battery and switch so will that protect the 50 amp switch. Or will this new one probably burn out?

Thanks,

Matt

they hooked the fan right to the thermal fan switch , thats not good... You really need to use a high current relay to directly activate teh fan. The FS is only good to around an amp or so.

matt, locate the relay that the fan connects to, and im not completely sure(someone correct me if im wrong)
i think it is a green wire, if u ground that then it should turn the fan on

its the F terminal on the relays
