Cooling a stock 87 l98????
Cooling a stock 87 l98????
I had been noticeing my car running hot on the interstate, so, i now have 4 fans come on with ignition,2 pushers in frount of condinser, 2 pullers in front of radiator. 180 stat, new radiator new waterpump that rotates in the correct direction, new hoses top, and bottom ect-ect-ect. It all helped, but would still top out at 230-235 on interstate (yes my airdam is in perfect shape!). I have a second autometer temp gauge to verify stock gauge. It never boils over! I have no steam in exaust, and no water in the oil, or vise-versa. It will idel at 185-190 all day! But u give it some rpms, and the temp will gradually rise! If i am on the interstate, it will top out at 230-235. One thing i did notace: I pulled the thermostat so i could see what kind of flow i had out of the pump. I pulled the thermostat, and pulled the top radiator hose off of the radiator. Had great flow at idle, but when i reved it up, had a ton of flow for a second, then almost none, then alot, then almost none, and so on. Is that water wetter really work at all? Any suggestions guys? Thanks in advance!!!
P.S. car in sig is not this car!!!!!!!

Hot at speed
Well, it almost sounds like you have a partial blockage in your cooling system. Pulsing like that isn't normal. Things off the top of my head:
1/ water pump lost a blade
2/ slipping belt on pump
3/ obstacle in the cooling system
4/ collapsing coolant hose
5/ thermostat mis-behaving
I'm sure there are other possibilities, but those are the ones that come immediately to mind.

Yes timing can have the effect of raising your engine temp. You may wanna check / adjust it. You should also check the items IROZINCO mentioned. Have you given your rad a proper flush?(Replacing with the proper coolant / water mix?). And yes, water-wetter does work and it will drop the temperature by some.
Yes guys, i have double checked timing, it is at 6 degrees, and like in my post, new correct pump, new radiator, about 30/70 mix antifreese to water with purple ice new hoses, this is all in my orignal post, execpt the timing, and coolant mix. I also did this flush proceedure located here:

In response my friend had the very same problems. He finally realized that it was the heater core. For some reason it wasnt letting water out it was just sucking air into the system causing air pockets. NOT GOOD FOR A PRESSURIZED SYSTEM. You should try bypassing the heater core for a little bit and see if that solves anything if that doesnt do it man I have no idea what could be the problem maybe a blocked port in the block or heads thats making the water force through a smaller area creating less flow? Hope I helped.

I guess the heater core thing is possible, but unless you've got some sort of coolant on your p/s floor that probably wouldn't be my first place to look. I'd look more at the thermostat and a possible hose collapsing. If that isn't it, I'd guess there's a blockage in the system somewhere.

Try turning off the fans while on the freeway, they might be causing an air restriction. There must be a blockage somewhere in the system. My ZZ4 stays at 180 on the freeway without the fans on using my stock radiator, new pump, and a 160* thermostat. Sounds like either you are either getting inadequate air through the radiator while at speed or there is a blockage in your system. Are you sure you don't have a faulty new pump?
Must be a blockage, because like in my post, it isn't vehicle speed related, it is rpm related! When i get back to Missouri i am going to just start tearing into the motor! I want to "freashin it up "
anyway! Later!
anyway! Later! I'd start by changing the t-stadt since it's a cheap fix if that's what it is.
It "may" be a radiator problem, or could also be the water pump.
but...since this thread is a month old almost....I'd assume you found one of those to be the problem already.
