A/C head pressure

I'm on my third reman'd compressor here. I've just put the latest one on, and had the accumulator and orifice tube replaced as well. I took it to my local Pep Boys for the work, and I'm having thoughts that wasn't the best place to go.

I went to pick up the car, and they had unhooked the pressure switch at the accumulator. They said that my fans were not coming on fast enough to counter the rising pressure, and told me it would reach 325 lbs before the fans come on on the high side, and 50 or so on the low side. The fans would come on and the temp would drop quickly. They wouldn't show me the guage, but they said they had flushed a lot of metal shavings out of the condenser from when the second compressor destroyed itself. They said the fans are the problem, and once they operate at the right pressure the a/c will be just fine. They said I'd need to wire in a separate control for the fans that will turn them on faster. Does this all sound like a big crock? What else would be causing my compressors to fail?

Yes actually, it does make sense. They are probably wrong by telling you to install a seperate switch to turn your fans on sooner but they are on the right track.

The fans should come on ANYTIME the compressor is on, usually at a lower speed than for high temps but they should come one. Either the A/C clutch or the ECM puts in a fan request and that is whats not working. When your fans are coming on its probably because of temperature and not from an A/C request.

With no air moving over the condensor, stop and go traffic on hot days the high side pressure can get very high and will accelerate wearout. If you spend alot of time idleing in traffic the compressors won't last long.
