220+ in traffic and in staging lanes, need help deciding the best route

When I am drive on the hwy it is fine but when I am in stop and go traffic and in the staging lanes the temp shoots over 220. I have a new radiator, coolant temp sesor, t-stat, and the right mixture of water and coolant. I was wondering if a 160degree t-stat would be too cold? I was looking at the fan switches like the ones hypertech and jet sell, but it looks like those only control one of the fans, am I right? I also read the "sticky" at the top of this board about the Hayden fan switches, where could I find out more info on them or buy them? Or should I just wire in my own switch ? What do you think???

Thanks for your help

how much over 220? and does it stay there?

these cars are designed to run that hot before the fans kick on and keep them near that temp.

the thermostat mearly sets the MIN temp.. NOT THE MAX TEMP.

to adjust when the fans kick on, you can switch to a diff aftermarket switch that turns the fans on at a lower temp, or you can add in a switch that turns the fans on manualy.

now what i do for the staging lanes might sound a lil wierd butttt...

i disconnect the elec connector at the front of the AC compressor.

i then turn my AC on.... the fan already comes on whenever the AC is on.... this just makes it so i can turn the fan on, but the AC is off..

right before i stage, i flip the AC off all the way.

other then that, i dont worry too much about my cars temp being at 220 when im in traffic.

MrDude-
Thats a pretty good idea, I'll have to try it. The hottest i have tested it at was 234, that was the same as the temp gauge was reading , and that is about as high as it goes. I can really notice a difference when the car is that hot, it is alot faster at 190 or below. What do you think about a 160degree t-stat, too cold or no? Thanks for the reply

yea.. i think thats kinda low... esp if you live in WI..... the engine is never going to warm up in the winter.... and your heater wont be as hot. 180 or so is as low as i would go.

Well, I was thinking of the 160 because I NEVER drive the car in the winter, it stays in a nice warm garage under a cover all winter.

yoinked from here:

Most people seem to think that all a cooling system needs to do is keep the engine from overheating. But what is not realized is if the engine runs too cool, thermal efficiency is lost and power is reduced. Many will argue that an engine has more power when it is cold, but that is only due to the fact that the intake air is colder and denser, actual BSFC is higher. Remember that an engines whole job is to make heat and turn it into mechanical energy. Running the engine as hot as possible (limited by the coolant boiling point) will increase power and provide a lower BSFC. If the coolant begins to boil, steam pockets will form and detonation will limit power (by forcing you to retard timing to less than optimum or run the engine cooler).

there IS such a thing as too cool.

if on a cool night your car stays at that 160 stat, it will never warm up.... and im pretty sure the EFI in most 3rdgens perform better when the engine is up to operating temp..

i guess what im saying is that there is no need for you to have a 160 thermo... you're better off with a 180-stock(190?) one

thermostats set the MIN operating temp. they have no effect on the max temp with the exception that if the water is cooler to start with it takes a lil bit longer to get there...

I installed manual fan switches, whenever I am in traffic, i just turn the fans on and the engine always stays below 220.

Run the secondary fan all the time, and put in a 170 degree thermostat.
