Overheating issues, need your help

Hey guys I got a problem with my newly acquired 84 Z. After driving it like 10 miles the temp guage reads around 240. I opened the hood and the water in the resivore was full and boiling. When the car is cool or has not been driven there is no water at all in the resivore. What can be causing the temp to go that high and the water to boil? Also why is there no water in the resivore? I put a new thermostat in before this happened. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Mike

congrats on the new car. is the radiator tank full when you first go to it in the morning? are your fans working? is your airdam in place? does it overheat on highways or just city driving?

Thanks, no the radiator tank is not full in the morning. It is empty. Im pretty sure the fan works. I dont think the airdam is on. But would that cause such an increase in temperature? Last time it did this I drove it on the highway. Today I drove it on the highway and also in the city.

Also, check your Catalytic Converter. If it plugs, can cause this problem. Did for me when the car had 3K miles on it.

fill ur system with antifreeze/water mixture. check for leaks when car is idling. if no leaks present later in day...suspect your waterpump. on the pump itself is a little weap hole. check to see any liquids there. also, without an airdam (little black plastic piece bolted onto radiator support under car) it will overheat on the highway. it redirects the air to cool the car off.
