fluid leaking

My dad called me today and told me about leaking near the firewall/tranny of the car, he checked the hose's and the radiator and what not and none of the hoses seem to be leaking, I was poking around in here and wasn't quite sure what a heater core was and was curious as to if that could be what is causing the leak/problem. Is it possible to just have a hose go from the intake manifold to the waterpump to see if that solves the leak problem and drive without heat, to test the system?
