changeing stock fans and good?
i got a mechanical fan that i plan on converting to electrical next winter, but 4 now i can get and aftermarket fan (blades)off a buddy of mine and i was wondering if the aftermarket one would work better then the stock fan????? theres a pic below of a engine with the same aftermarket fan blade i can get (the pic is bottlefed125) so would the aftermarket one help? work better then stock????
While I haven't done any truly scientific testing of the two, I prefer factory style fans over aftermarket flex fans (although I'll admit the fan in the picture is slightly different from ones I've owned before). There are a few reasons why I prefer the factory style fans with thermal clutches. First, in my experience, they cool better. Second, they have been quieter than the aftermarket ones. Third, I can turn the fan to move it out of the way when working on the engine. Finally, I never could go under the hood of the car with an aftermarket fan without cutting myself multiple times. I wouldn't even know I did it until I started getting blood on things.
Just my opinions though!

that fan sucked...i threw it on the scrap pile...it couldnt keep the engine cool for **** so i went to electric. makes the engine cleaner anyway and take less horsepower due to less drag from the fan going through the air.

it was so purdy i blew a radiator, my engine hit over 250 degrees and i burned my wires....cant stop a car fast enough when you are doing 150mph and when i shut it down the temp just kept going up. it was a very ugly day...very very ugly.

If you do use a mechanical fan (I've had one before on these cars), make sure to get the upper and lower fan shrouds (available from the dealer for something like an 82 trans am or camaro).. It won't cool very well without the shrouds set up right..
I'd definately go to electric though the first chance you get..
