Stock oil cooler?

So in the process of swapping the motor in my Formula, I see that there is a stock oil cooler on the filter. I have heard that this doesn't really help out too much, and that it's pretty much pointless. Can I remove it, and what will happen (good or bad) once it's gone.

'88 350 TPI.

Thanks.

I chucked mine. As long as you're engine isn't running hot it has no noticeable effect.

There in SoCal, I'd keep it. These cars run pretty hot anyway, seems like, and getting the oil temp down a few degrees would help the life of the engine I'd think.

But does it really help? What I mean is that the hot coolant from the engine is what's trying to cool the oil. I think that if anything, it would keep the oil only as cool as the coolant.
So if that's so, (or no matter what anyway) wouldn't an aftermarket oil cooler be better?

I just don't see this cooler being worth anything. I mean, what other cars since have had them? LT1s don't.

yes an aftermarket is always going to do a better job on an oil cooler and a transmission cooler factory they wont get any cooler than the water temp that is leaving the radiator .....which is going to be cooler than what is in the engine if you didnt have a cooler at all but if your debating whether to purchase an after market cooler or leave the original id purchase an aftermarket one ..

on another note if your debating on taking off a good working cooler and chucking it for none then id leave the original

Your oil will also take longer to heat up after a cold start without the factory cooler.

oil temp is 250-260 degress...coolant temp is 195-210...ive done the "testing" with an oil temp guage...without the oil cooler the oil is about 25-30 degrees hotter....LT1's and LS1's have an oil cooler...
