adding oil cooler off the filter and external oil pump????
is it possible to hook up a adapter for a remote oil cooler and install a 12v pump to help my crappy oil pressure at idle when its hot. it drops to 12 psi and i can feel some little tiny starts of a knock when it gets that low. i would add just a oil cooler but i guess you must tap off the filter for external lines and my oil pressure will kill my engine with more to pressurize. i have tried to run different oils and weights with no help. it gets hot cause my 2 " exhaust runs 1/4" away from the pan. i need more flow. also me and everyone i know has a difference of opinion on oil weights. i was told by my highschool auto shop teacher (a true gearhead) that the "w" in 10w-30 stood for winter and this means its a 10 weight when its cold to get oil to the top end faster and when it warms up it will maintain a 30 weight. only reply to this if you know for sure.....it is opposite of common belief that oil gets thinner when it warms up....what do the numbers mean?/??//??

Oil does get thinner as it warms... he was probably trying to explain the concept of multi-viscosity oil in application, not in how it works. Here's how it works.

As far as the auxiliary pump, I doubt that will work. Your oil pump can only supply X volume of oil, and attempting to draw a higher volume of oil through it wouldn't work, as best I can see. Without the increased volume, there's no way to increase pressure. Might want to start considering doing bearing job.

then what exactly is it that is allowing the pressure to drop when warm? my motor is very strong with the 4 spd and the 2.80's it runs great and is very fast in the top end.why does everyone always say its bearings? a high volume pump wouldnt give me better pressure?

Excessive bearing clearance is the problem (the space between the bearings and their journals). The larger the gap is, the more oil is able to flow through the bearings. More flow through the bearings == less pressure retained in the system. Can't have both without a higher volume pump. An inline auxiliary pump will not create additional volume because the mechanlical pump only allows so much oil to flow through it. Can't suck more through it than that. Without additional volume, you cannot create additional pressure. A complex setup using an auxiliary pump scavenging from the oil pan might work, but the required involvement would make installing a high volume mechanical pump just as easy.

ok then what is changing to make the oil psi drop only when it is hot? bearing gap getting largerwhen warm? and a high volumeoil pump will work? thanks

Oil thins out as it warms up. It flows better. That is what is meant by multi-viscosity oils. Pressure is resistance to flow. When cool, the oil is thicker; it doesn't want to move as well. Thus, pressure readings are higher. Things warm up, oil thins out, it flows better through and around the engine. Pressure readings, in turn, drop.
A high volume pump will be a 'temporary' solution. It will work, until the bearings wear even more, bringing you to the point of replacement.

ive had this problem with motors before..
IF its only when hot, and you run a oil cooler, the problem usually disappears.
the excessive clearance is still there, but the engine will still live a long happy life.
to install one:
take the oil filter off.
screw the adapter on inplace of the filter
screw the filter onto the adapter. you have to use the shorter "car" length filter now... no "truck" filters
mount the cooler
run the lines from the adapter to the cooler.
thats it. anyone should be able to do it in a hour..

thank you buddy ill try that.. mabye some heat tape on the header that runs under the oil pan...i just didnt want it to really ruin the pressure

Except the heat tape will ruin/rust through the headers (do a search).....

if you're really that worried about it, tack a piece of sheetmetal to the oil pan make a heat shield that way.... athough i dont think its really needed.

the "adapter" has to be bought along with the oil cooler. it installs between your oil filter and the block and gives you two lines to install for the cooler..

i just did a google search, but thats basicly what it looks like
heres more of them

the adapter goes where the oil filter goes, then that centerpiece screws on to hold it to the block... the centerpiece also has threads for the oil filter to screw onto it.

thanks for help mrdude, i should of ask in more deatale this is what i ment i think i fig it out ?one goes into block and the other goes into the RAt? I do not have heater control valve.
How would i hook up a factory oil cooler? i have a vett L98 and the water pump has a 1/2 pipe comeing out of it,(GTA water pump douse not have this) this pipe is right above the the pipe that the lower rat hose goes on. anywaze the 1/2 pipe goes to a hose that goes to one end of the oil cooler the other ends goes right into the block
how would i hook this up with the gta water pump?

all i know is its a coolent based one instead of a air based one like the aftermarket ones.
