Manual fan switch questions..

Ok, while the site was down I ran into some problems with a leaaky rad. Well I am going to get a new one, but I also want to rig up a manual fan switch. Can anyone explain how to do this? Where is the sensor, and do I just need to ground it or what?

Thanks.

oh, and while I'm at it, instead of starting a new thread.. I have also been looking into an a/f gauge, but I hear most of 'em just bounce around and dont tell you anything, but then again all of these are from people with computer controlled engines. Mine is an lg4 with no computer controls, so will an a/f gauge work for me?

I have this with my electric water pump and dual factory electric fans installed to it. 2 yrs and going strong.

If you just use it for your fans it'll automatically turn them on at a certain temperature, but you can also overide it and control your fans manually as well.

Thanks, but I dont think that will work. I am running a belt driven pump, and I was hoping for a cheaper solution...

LOL, no you use that to control the fans. It's can be used to activate an electric water pump (if a person runs ones) or electric fan/s (or both together like mine) since it's directly related and operates using the water temperature for the trigger in automatic mode or you can flip the toggle swicth the other way to manually turn the fans on/off at YOUR disposal. But if you daily drive the car, you can set the switch onto the automatic side so the fans operate as soon as water temp hits 160* and then they shut themselves off at 140*.

Hm, ok, well then the other problem is that 160/140 is way too low for a daily driven car up here in canada, so I'd like just run the switch, so it would be a waste of money for that kit. All I want is to be able to flip a switch and have the fan come on, and then flip it off and have it depend on the stock sensor. So what do I have to do to accomplish this? is it in fact as easy as grounding the sensor?

Without seeing a schmatic, you could essentially do what you want by getting a on-off-on type toggle switch. Using relays you could use the one side of the switch (in the on position) to retain the factory sensors/set-up so it'd be busniess as usual.

Then you could use the other side of the switch to operate the fans manually (essentially a manual override) type set-up for when you feel you need that extra cooling.

It'd just be a matter of looking at a wiring diagram and plotting how to install this new switch in line for the purpose you want.

heh that's pretty much what I was origionally asking, too. I cant find any diagrams in any manuals that would help, and I dont know where the switch is physically located. I think it's under the #6 spark plug, but I'm not certain.

I've got a chiltons and Hayes and both had diagrams for our cars-I used them extensively when I was weeding out wires I did not need, so if you have'nt bought one or the other or both, they're worth the price ESPECIALLY on the wiring part!!!

I do believe your correct on the fan sensor location on the pass. sie head, drivers side being water temp sensor.

Just a matter now of tracing the wires to fnd the one that tie everythng together.

Good luck!

Also: Don't forget to install relays, other wise you'll burn up switches after awhile.

Ok, thanks. I'll have to do some more looking. I have both those manuals, but I couldnt understand the wiring, whether or not it would work to just ground the sensor. And I'll be sure to install relays.

Didnt know the temp sensor was on the driver side though. I think it's on the thermostat bellhousing on mine, but whatever, my temp gauge hasnt given me any trouble as of yet.

Thanks for the help!
