Fans opening at 240

Hi,

Both my fans start at 240 degrees and turn down at 200 degrees. I had my car checked and the technician said the switch below the throttle body was faulty (when he took out that switch fans would start normally but when he put that switch on they start on 240 degrees).

I think I need to change that switch. Can anyone tell me the part name/number of that switch so I can buy a replacement? I have attached a picture of the area below (Sorry for the bad quality I took it with my cell phone on a very sunny day)

Thanks

the reason your fan(s) come on at 240 is because they're supposed to. the primary fan switch is located between #6 and #8 cylinders on the pass side head. replace that switch with a cooler temp one (like 200 on / 185 off). i don't know why the secondary fan would come on at the same time, but it is controlled by the ecm, which gets the input from the switch you asked about in the picture. it is called a coolant temperature sensor. it may or may not be bad, but i would definitely change the primary switch first. yes, you will get wet when you replace it, so you'll have to reservice your coolant. ordinarily, the secondary fan won't come on unless you are way hot, and/or if you kick on the a/c.

I've already replaced the primary fan switch with a hypertech 180 degrees fan switch shouldn't that make the first fan open at 180 degrees? I also have 180 thermostat.

yes, it should come on at 180 then. maybe it's faulty? the primary and secondary are independent of each other, so it should come on way before the other. are you sure your temp is reading accurate? it probably is, but if both fans are physically working, and apparently they are, i would replace that switch because that is the only thing that will make that primary fan come on. as far as temp is concerned, if the primary is working as advertised, the secondary shouldn't even come on. it comes on if the primary doesn't - more or less a back-up, unless, as mentioned before, you turn on the a/c...

hopefully someone else can jump on here and maybe help you out a little more, but to me it sounds like a bad switch. i won't have access to the internet tonite, so i can't help you any further, but let me know what you find out. i just hope what i've told you helps...

Hey Partner, I have an 87 TPI GTA and I'm under the assumption that the ECM & PROM control the Primary fan which is on the driver's side if you're standing directly in front of the car. The secondary cooling is the one running off the temperature sensor located between cyls. 6 & 8.
If I'm wrong that could explain why we had trouble installing the Derale adjustable switch.

Regards,
Laser
