a/c clutch not engaging
a/c clutch not engaging
So seeing as how its summer.....i went to turn the a/c on......clutch wont engage... What all is linked together to tell the compressor to turn on?? relays, fuses, Etc. Any replaceable switched on the compressor itself? didnt appear to be but im asking anyways.....the clutch will move freely by hand. before this happened, last summer the lutch would engage and disengage quite often, More than twice or so per minute?
The Worthless haynes doesnt give too much detail about the a/c system itself due to the fact that they just dont reccomend anyone servicing it themself. But to hell with that
Where should i start looking? get a new clutch for the compressor? get a whole new compressor??

Kicking in and out often indicates the freon is getting low. Since it never kicks in now, it's probably empty or really low. Why? The AC system has a low pressure switch that won't allow the compressor to run if the freon pressure is too low.

i have the r 134 change over kit, but r 12 is in the system now...Or may have all leaked out....in any event....for a split second i thought about taking a phillips head screwdriver to the low side nipple to see if it was pressurized at all, but nah....im just going to have the entire system evacuated tomorrow that way there isnt any guess work.....and i cant just convert over to r 134 ...
On a side note, the handy dandy dvd i got with the conversion kit states that nothing needs to be changed in order to switch over.....just have the system evacuated and fill it up..
Now I was under the impression that you needed a new oriface tube, accumulator, and all new o rings. And even at that, the molecular structure of r 134 is thinner than that of r 12 so it will still most likely leak out of the stock AC tubing.
But in any event, if the *quick conversion* doesnt work....I can grab the dvd and tell the company that THEY told me to do it that way.. then have them laugh at me, and do nothing about replacing the destroyed components.

I've seen many just vent the exiting freon (if any) and charge it up. Then have it work for years and years. I've still got R12 in my Camaro. Converted my 85 fullsize chevy pickup to 134a about a month ago and it works really, really well. It was empty so I just added the 134a.

i released all my r 12 with a screwdriver and filled it and its nice and cold. but i have a little vibration comming from the compressor when i hit the gas.
now did you release it from the high or low side lol.....also....th elow side IS on the accumulator ight?? no one vacuumed the sysytem out?? you just....pushed it in til it quit making noise?

yes its on the accumulator, push it till there is no more. but when filling it up make sure the car is running ac on max because if not you will get a diffrent reading from the gage.
ok, sucker was bone dry as it was....so i commenced to putting the cans in, i went through about 2 3/4 15 oz cans *interdynamics brand* and the gauge never read past 40.....so i just left it be, took the presure off the gauge, turned the a/c off and checked the pressure again...it read 75, was a lil too high so i let some out til it read 65.....
In any event, its not the coldest a/c in the world....but its at least SOME a/c.....and thats good enough for me......something MAY be wrong with my cooling system in general.....but the compressor DID kick on......and stays on constantly now....the accumulator produces condensation......and my a/c blows colder air than whats outside.....so thats all i care about for now.......
I have a brand new accumulator and oriface tube in my back seat, but i didnt feel the urge to switch them out.... oh well......itll all eventually leak out again anyways....ill bother with it when that happens.....
Thanks for the help though, Its funny that i rebuilt my entire rear end from reading one article yet i was REAL shady about doing any A/C work.....
On a side note, you shoulda seen me out there wearing gloves, and my 60 dollar 3M respirator looking like i was doing something REALLY important.

no problem. but the gages will read high when the car is off thats no problem. but i thinking of changing my rear end on my 85 bird. you have any tips.n thanks
changing the entire rear out or rebuilding the rear???
All depends on what gears you want, and you have to find a 26 spline carrier for the axels to fit correctly.... If you aare looking to go posi that is....which i would, i mean......while you are in there .
I can give you a list of the tools needed, where you can get them, bearing preload tolerances, backlash tolerances.... etc etc....
Just IM me on AIM under the name AspiredTwo if you have any questions about it.
