overheating '91 RS w/305

It overheated, & blew the head-gasket. Now, the head-gasket is new, the thermostat is new, and the water-pump. Also the fan switch.

It doesn't oveheat now, but it's still running 240-ish. The temp gets up there pretty fast. Within a couple miles. Is my radiator shot? Maybe the new thermostat is bad? I'm also thinking my EGR &/or solenoid is bad, but would that be more noticable after a head-job?

Help, please!

Thanks

Dont let it get that hot or you'll blow it again.

Your radiator might be bad, or it might just be plugged up and can be cleaned. I'd take the car to a competant shop and let them diagnose it.. a new radiator isn't all that much.

You do have the air deflector underneath the car correct? without it you'll heat up REAL quick. Also check to make sure the front of the radiator isn't covered with leaves or debris.

Is your fan coming on. When I went to get my oil changed they wanted to flush my radiator because car was running hot. I passed, took car home and found fan was not coming on(at 220) and started checking fuses and relays. Sounds simple but plausable.

thanks for the info. come to find out:

a. my gauge is reading approx 13 degrees too high
b. i do NOT have an air deflector

now i just have to figure out the other stuff. I may have a bad EGR, and the shop that did the head job said the wires that go to my cig lighter and radio are getting power, but neither work anymore. I can't find a blown fuse.

have you tried the coolant temp sensor? my car gets up to what the gauge reads as "240" which supposedly is only in the neighborhood of "227-228" if my gauge is off as I was told.

It gets up there and then it will come down to what the gauge reads as 220. Then it goes up and down between those 2 temps.

Today I'm installing a new air deflector, as mine has been missing for some time now. I will let you know if that solves my problem. Let me know what you find out about yours.

found most of the problem

I think I found out what was most of the overheating problem. I replaced the thermo with an acdelco, and new air dam, fellas you need the air dam. I need to figure out why my fan is pushing air out instead of pulling air in. Maybe i got the wrong fan motor, i replaced the motor and kept the blades that was on the old one. all i know the air dam is needed badly on camaros, so if you think you want to take it off please DONT!!!!!!!
Thanks for the help guys

you either got the wrong fan motor or messed up the installation...

my car used to get past 220 and almost enter the red so i did a radiator flush, drained the block coolant, and got a 180 thermo. Now it rarely goes over the 2nd mark on the temp gauge (the mark before 220) even in 90* weather...

by the way, how do i know if my rad cap is shot? It looks old and there is dried coolant splashes on the radiator near it. I dont know if thats from the cap leakng or me getting coolant all over when i was filling the radiator
