Short Fan Relay Life...
This is for a RS camaro with a 350 swapped in. It's a single fan system. It has a 3-core radiator and aluminum water pump. Otherwise colling system is stock. It has AC but is not hooked up.
What would cause a fan relay to burn out it a couple months?
I just reaplced mine in October and it's toast again. I buy Standard fan relays, from my local auto store. Descent parts.
The connector that goes into the fan looks like one terminal is a little burned. I'm good with a meter but I don't know what to check. My meter can't read more than 10 amps.
I tried a search but couldn't find anything. Thx.

An update....
When I changed the relay I noticed that the terminals that the relay plugs into were burnt. Just the 2 terminals for the high amp side. Low amp side was fine.
What controls how much amperage is supplied to the relay and fan motor. What if the fan motor is starting to go bad and is pulling a lot of amps. I didn't see any fusible links or anything on the big red wire going to the relay, is there supposed to be one?
What else would protect that circuit? If there is supposed to be one, what size fuse should it be? Any info is appreciated.

there isn't anything to control the current of the fan, it will pull what ever it needs up the the point of something burning out. if the fan motor is going bad it can draw too much current & cause your problem. there should be a fusible link somewhere to protect the wiring from excessive current draw if the fan motor locks up or shorts out.
depending on the size of the fuse link, they can handle quite a bit of current, i think 14 gage fuse link can handle around 60~70 amps before it lets go. it may be the plug side of the relay is what is causing all of your problem, if it has a bad connection it will cause heat build up & will fry the relay, with the terminals in it burned up you will need to replace the plug & relay, & maybe the fan motor too if its bad.
your meter isn't big enough to check the draw on the fan motor, when the fan first comes on they will surge upwards of 20 amps or higher & then settle back down as the fan comes up to speed, i haven't checked a good fan lately, but it seems like they pull around 7~12 amps once they are up at full speed.

Is there a resistance spec for either the enitre circuit (+or-) OR the fan motor?

Where is the fan grounded. THe + side only had .2 ohms resistance but the ground side (-batt to fan ground) was 54 ohms. I think that's my problem. Body to batt and engine to batt grounds are both good. So where is the fan grounded? Thx

On TBI cars, which mine used to be, it's grounded behind the passenger side head. And there no freakin room back there.
