Can a bad A/C clutch slow everything Down?

My A/C clutch rattles like hell I am sure It needs replacing. But the car also over heats and is losing charge. So I think its also slowing down everything on the beltdrive. If I run the a/c it stays cool, the temp gauge steadily declines but it drains the battery. Once I turn the a/c off I regain charge, but heat up steadily. Normaly people have problems with their car over heating with the a/c on, but with me its the opposite. I could use some help.

Electronic, the fan is working properly-that is, it does come on without the ac on. Its funny, if I run the ac my temp goes down and so does my charge. A/c off, the charge goes up but so does the temp. So I am just going to replace the known problem (A/C clutch) and see if that has any thing to do with it. The car is old and I wouldn't be suprised if I have to replace everything on the belt drive, which would be cool in the long run cause I would replace everything with performance parts.

Make sure the fan kicks on when your car gets hot. I suspect its not. Thats why when you turn the ac on it cools down. Because the fan is finally kicking on. It sounds like you also have a bad alternator. Its unlikely that the ac compressor is slowing down your accesorys. Sounds more like have the ac compressor clutch engaged along with the fan on is more than your alternator can handle.

Right now the battery is dead the car has been sitting for 6 months. I parked it for the winter and am now taking care of the problem. I tried to jump it but the car I was using could not stay for a nice long charge up plus it was a puny four banger honda. I did get it to turn over and the fan came on for some reason, also I am pretty sure it does come on without the a/c. I could be wrong though. I have to get that battery charged. But what you say makes alot of sence. So if my fan is not coming on at proper temp, is the fan temp switch broke? Do I have that right? I don't know. I 'll have more info in a week. You live close to Normal IL thats a funny name for a town.

it couldnt drag the engine down, not hardly anything cept maybe 100rpm at the most,

it would lose the belt first

if the clutch locks up then there goes your belt

seen it happen a few times

good luck

So my charging issue is the alternator then. Whats the part called thats part of the A/c clutch, compressor assembly that ingages and disingauges. It has a big coils inside of it.
