Replacing the compressor is not difficult. Relax the tension on the belt just as if you were replacing the belt, remove the bolts and hose connections and it is out. If you fraged the compressor it is a good idea to flush the system. Also a good time to convert to 134a. Auto Zone will loan you a vacuum pump for a deposite ... not sure about gages. You should also replace the dryer/accumulator and orifice if metal in the system.

Normally when a compressor goes bad, it's likely because of something else in the A/C system not working properly. If you replace just the compressor and replace it, your going to need a new one soon.. I would put the compressor in, make sure there is lubricant and freeon in the system, take it to a shop and have them flush it out, and re-charge the system. Best way IMO.

hey, i bought a new compressor (with conversion kit). my a/c system isn't too pretty. should i get new rings/seals for the whole system, or are the ones for the compressor sufficient? the system has been empty for about 3 years, so i figure there hasn't been any oil/refrigerant flowing through the system to moisten to seals <=== why i think they all might be bad. any suggestions where i could get some seals if i need them (autozone, napa, etc.)?

Yes, replace all the seals. Any regular parts store like Napa or someone should have them. And make sure and lube them with R-134A oil before plugging the lines in and bolting them down. If the system has been empty for so long, I would also recommend flushing the whole system, and if possible, put a vacuum on it to see if it holds vacuum. After that, also inject some dye into the system after re-charging it, and in about a week or two, check all of the lines for leaking dye. You need a special tool to do this, I am not sure what it's called.. but it will make the dye show up when the light is pointed on it.

The dye is fluorescent and illuminates under a black light.
