I have an 88 Formula L98. I havent been able to find a manual fan control switch for a third gen so I want to know if anybody has any direction on how to make my own.

the previous owner put one in my car, The easiest way it seems if to find the ground to the fans, Splice in a wire, too a switch, then to ground, this will make the fans work factory when u have the switch closed, and turn them on when u open the switch ( grounding out the fans) Hope this helps

To further elaborate, the wire you need to ground is the green wire with the white stripe on the relay closest to the drivers door on the firewall

i went to canadian tire and bought 16 gauge wire, a relay fuse, and a on/off switch. 2 wires coming from the fan, one goes to the battery, with the fuse being inbetween. THe other wire goes to the switch, and another wire going from the switch to a ground.

Like the previous dude said.

Locate the FAN RELAY on the driver side firewall, its next to the brake booster. There is green wire with a white stripe, T into it. T means that you don't cut the wire, you just strip it to bare wire then take your 16 gauge wire and tie it around the area you stripped off the green wire. From there, you can either ground that wire to the frame. This will make the fan be on all the time. OR, you can wire it to a rocker switch (your choice really) and wire it through firewall inside your car. There just ground it to a good chasis/frame ground, and bam you can controll the fan. Thats what I got in my car and have had for two years. Its really awsome, cuz in winter you don't even have to turn the fan on. ANd when you need to pass emissions, just let the car warm up to 220 or maybe even higher and than turn on the fan. Its very cool and saves money.

thanks guys, i didnt think it was that easy. The reason I posted was because I went to the strip, the staging lanes were packed and I was making runs while the fans were on at 220. I killed my times by 3 tenthes. thanks again.

Im confused, so when the switch is off, the fan will still come on when engine gets hot enough? and when the switch is on the fans on no matter what? if thats right this is definately worth doing. Cuz I will forget to turn the fan on sometimes.

just an FYI guys - you can run a switch to the wire inside the a/c control panel as well - when on any of the a/c functions, that unit has to turn on the fans - i just tapped in there and it works great - can't leave the fan on by accident ect...

Thats the nice thing about grounding the relay.... The fan shuts off with ignition, so no dead batteries

true, but this way your not fishing wires through the firewall lol there is always a few ways to do things - it all depends on which route you want to go - figuered i toss the way i did it out there

hey guys i have a quick question. i want to do this this week and i started looing at it today to find the wire i need to splice and all that. but i got the idea to make the rear defrost lighted switch into the fan switch. what all would i have to do to do that? i should be able to just T into the green and white wire for the fans and then connect that wire with the positive wire on the rear defrost switch and that should work right?

i can't remember who makes it but there's a plug in module that you plug into your temp. sensor for the fan and it kicks it on at like 175 instead of 200 or something like that. it worked wanders for my 91

heres a trick:
go underhood and unplug the AC compressor...
now when you're in the staging lanes, turn the AC on... this cuts on the fan... but not the AC... then before you go up, just turn the AC off...

just make sure you unplug the compressor so that you dont get condensation on the track...

FANTASTIC IDEA

That switch is a MOMENTARY connected to a timer.
It will turn the fan on approximately 10
minutes the first press and 5 each additional
press. If you want it to stay on till you turn it off then you must install
an additional relay before the timer.

Now will splicing the green wire at the relay turn on both or just the primary fan?

so i would have to install another relay b4 the timer? any idea where the timer is located at in the wiring? also what size relay do you think i should use? and all i would need to do is run a wire from the green wire with the white stripe, for the fans, to the switch and splice it into the existing wiring for the switch?

Oh Relay ?

so i would have to install another relay b4 the timer?

Yes, and you will be setting it up as a latching relay. Also you will should
disconnect the defroster element.

any idea where the timer is located at in the wiring?

The timer should be mounted on a PCB with the switch.

what size relay do you think i should use?

You can use a small relay because your new relay
is just going to control the
fan relay.

all i would need to do is run a wire from the green wire with the white
stripe, for the fans, to the switch and splice it into the existing wiring for the
switch?

I haven’t seen those colors however use
the N.O. contacts on the switch to
activate the relay.

.
Happy Racing !

Or, you can just install a separate fan control temperature switch. Purchase a $22 AutoMeter switch at whatever temperature you like, and install it:

i spliced the relay on the drivers side firewall, the green with white strip and i grounded that but the fans wont turn on?

what relay is it? their is 3 of them. is it the closest to the brake booster or closest to the driverside fender? the fender one has no green wire.. neither does the middle one so i have to have the right fan relay

and my fan works like normal so i know its not dead. i can put in my diagnostic tester in the port and turn the ignition on and the fan turns on.
