Secondary fan/cooling system questions.
Hey guys,
My 88 IROC usually always runs at 160 on the line according to my temp gauge. Today, I was in a traffic jam and it was really hot out. My temp was going above the 220 mark. I just thought it was strange, because I barely ever see it rise that high. My primary fan (left) kicks on only once the engine temp surpasses 220 degrees. I tried putting my A/C on max to see if it would kick my secondary (right) fan on and it didn't come on. Is there a possibility that just my secondary fan is screwy? If so, what do I need to fix to get the secondary fan going again. Also, since I bought the car, my coolant always boils up into my reservoir after I have driven the car. Even if it is cool outside, and even if my temp gauge reads normal (160). I can typically hear the coolant boiling in my reservoir when I am walking away. And every Saturday when I check all my fluid levels, my coolant reservoir is always low on fluid (down to the bottom of the reservoir when cold). There are no visible signs of an external coolant leak. Is this normal? I checked my radiator cap to make sure it is getting correct pressure and the rubber/plastic piece inside seems a bit frayed. Any ideas, suggestions?
Thanks,
JCRULZ

I think we've all gone through the same cooling issues when we first bought our cars. I replaced everything in my cooling system at first and still didn't help. Should have thought small, replaced the damn gauge. Runs 185 to 200 on any hot day here in Texas. If you still have the stock gauges in there and have never been recalibrated to your knowlidge, replace it. As for the Sec. Fan, I'd check for any loose connections, then the motor.

The TBI cars only got 1 fan. The Z28 or TPI cars have the dual fan set-up's, 87 and up wise.
