Do I have an old style or a new A/C system?

I called a auto shop to see about getting the freon recharged and they asked me if I had the new or old system? They said if I had the old I had to replace it and it would be about $300 to do that. If I had the new $159 to get it done.
My car is 1995 Trans AM. How can I verify if I have the old or the new? I looked online and if the information was correct all cars from 1995 on had the new systems, but I don't know if that info is correct. Does anyone know?

Thank you!

Emily

Good grief! The shop should know what your car's equipped with. If the guys there don't, burn rubber seeking another shop.

yea, I was thinking that, but it was just some woman that was working the phones. She didn't seem to know much more than how to take appointments.

Any idea about the system being old or new?

Oh yea I meant to ask if anyone would recommend the type of system I should go with since I'm going to have to upgrade. There seems to be a couple of different types of systems if I'm reading some of the other post correctly.

Are you on crack?? By federal law, production of R12 ceased at the end of 1995. The first cars with R134a refrigerant were in the showroom in 1992. I for one know GM was doing this. I have a 93 Z28 with R134a freon from the factory, not a retro fit. I have checked Alldata. They specify R134a as the proper freon for this car. So case closed. Unless some moron has butchered the system.

hmm maybe i typed wrong or something i ment to say if its all factory its the old r-12 system (speaking thirdgens of coarse) i know you can still buy refridgerent for the R-12 systems though, just need a license to purchase it. and you can upgrade r-12 systems to use the new r-134a.

Thanks for the correction. I've had the relay and fuses checked and I made sure the compressor still works. My neighbor and I checked for the freon by pressing the valve and got nothing so it seems I'm just out of freon.

Am I correct in assuming the only I need to do is have the A/C charged again and hope I don't have any leaks?

Thanks!
