Water pump on its way out?

So i was driving my car a few days ago (305 tbi) and about 5-10 minutes after i left my house i noticed the temp was pushing 260. I didnt even think it could heat up that fast but i turned on the heat hoping for a quick fix and it went back down to around 180. Itll bounce around now anywhere from 240-180ish. My brother suggested the water pump was stopping every now and then causing it to heat up really fast, then cool down a bit. Anyway, i just wanna get your opinions on this before i go spend some money. Also, if it is the water pump, is it an easy fix, and details about putting a new pump in would be helpful. Thanks

The water pump will not just stop pumping. It is a belt driven water pump.

Sounds like you may have a sticking thermostat or your lower radiator hose may be collapsing.
