OEM relay or aftermarket one?

If it is just a normal relay from a auto store there will be 4 plugs on the bottom of it,
1 you ground, 1 is main power (heavy wire direct from batt), 1 is main power out (Heave wire to fan) and the last is a power wire from a switch (Direct power to switch then wire from switch to relay).

Just mount the relay near youre battery, That is what i did.
I used a free 40A relay out of a wrecked Toyota and i havent had a problem with it.

EDIT: U got Dual fans or a single, i had to run 2 relays 1 for eatch fan, I duno if 1 40A relay will run both if you have duals.

Here is a simple schematic I drew up at work. This should get you started in the right direction at least.

thx, Wait IF you are running the fans off a manual switch there is a chance the OEM system was not working when you got the car.
If you just want to start over with the current system Get a basic relay Cut the wire going to the fan (about 12" from the fan) then put That wire going to the fan on the main out plug of the relay (plug 1) then hook main power to the other side of the relay (plug 2), use the old wire coming from the switch (in cab) on the relay (plug 3) and then ground the other side of the relay (plug 4).
That should work without burning out anymore switches.

i will post a pic soon, at work ATM.

I don't know what guage wireing it will want the guy at the auto parts store should know.
But just ask for about 2 feet of wire, a 30A or 40A 4 pin relay and some spade connectors.
That should do it, if u need any help just P/M me. Good luck dude.

realy, whys that? not tryin to sound rude.
i just set mine up like that because i wired a second fan in there and it seems to run fine like it, I have had it in there for 4 months now with no problems.
If it will be an issue i will change mine, just reverse relay to fan?.

That's just the way Chevy wired them. I guess if you want to start from scratch you could wire anyway you want, but if you just want to add a switch, break the primary ground wire at the stock relay run it to the switch and then ground the other side of the switch and you're done.

Also if you're running a long ground wire from the relay to the switch and it becomes cut or frayed and touches the chassis no big deal.

My fan wiring was all jacked up when I got my bird, so I just got a temperature relay that kicks on the fan automatically. It's got a little probe at the end that touches the radiator. I have it set to kick on about 210. Works pretty good and only required two wires, no switch. The best part is that I can adjust it to come on at a higher or lower temp. Works for me.
