a/c compressor question

well, i hope i picked the right board for this.

im fairly new to third gens, at least ones that have a/c that works.

my problem is that the compressor makes a horrendous whine while in idle, but not in drive. so anywhoo, i turn on the defog tonight and switch between hot and cold to make sure everything worked. i turn the slider back to hot and start hearing a noise like something engaging then disengaging. pop the hood to see the pulley from the compressor spinning then stopping. its not the actual pulley, but the front part of the pulley <unfortunatly im not sure of the name, sorry.> is this normal, cause i dont think ive seen my buick do it.

That loud noise is the aircon clutch slipping (I duno if it can be replaced) That is why it is not working. when it is switched on the clutch plate is pulled in and engages the pully if it pulls in but dose not grip the pully it will make a high pitch squeal and the aircon wont work.

engage and disengage is normal... A/C de-humidifies the air then cools so, when your in defog its kicking on then off to take some moisture outa the air inside the car to "defog" the windshield

Re: a/c compressor question

Very short cycling (rapid engage/disengage) can also be a symptom of a system that is low on refrigerant. If your A/C is cooling properly then this is probably not the case.
