sbc water pump sizing Q's
How does one go about determining what type/size of mechanical water pump fits specific applicaitons.
There are at least three sbc to choose from:
sbc long
sbc short - 5/8"
sbc short - 3/4"
I have no clue how to determine what I need. What do I measure or look at to figure out correct application. I have my old pump - but am not sure what to measure or campare it too.
TIA
-Andrew

Thirdgens came with the long style. And there were two different of those, depending on the year of your car: one for 1987 and earlier cars; and one for 1988 and later cars(serpentine belt system).

Thanks LAFireboyd,
I have a '91, with the serpentine setup - so would I need a long or short pump. I assume it's the long pump.
I looked through an old edelbrock catalouge and found out that you measure the height of the pump - distance from the mounting surface to the water pump hub to determine application. I have not actually measure my pump yet, but it looks to be the taller or 'long' style.

All passenger cars since 1969 that aren't Corvettes have long pumps. For a serpentine setup, you need a reverse rotation pump.

Apeiron,
besides edelbrock's p#8881 and Stewart's part# Long Stage 2 - 23123, who else makes an upgraded aluminum water pump with reverse flow? I don't see one listed from Weiland or Moroso or Milodon... Am I blind?
Also,
My serpentine set up has had its smog pump removed, however, I do have the a/c delet bracket still in place. So the original belt routing has been changed. How do you determine which way the pump turns? CCW from looking at the pump head on, or from behind (as if you are sitting in the driver's seat?) Is it possible to have a standard rotation pump working in a serpentine set up? (I hope this isn't a stupid Q.)
Thanks
Andrew

As long as the smooth side of the belt turns the water pump, it's still reverse rotation. I second going with a stewart one. Wanted to get one myself but they don't make what I want for my old school v-belt setup.

Re: sbc water pump sizing Q's
so if you have a serpetine system with a "reverse flow pump" and you want to install a v belt system. can you use that pump with a new pulley or do you get a new pump if so what one for what model car? thanks

If you convert from serpentine to V belts, you need to change to a normal rotation pump.

Re: sbc water pump sizing Q's
it's just the way the fins on the pump are. the coolant stills flows through the engine the same way. but the water pump shaft turns different.

Re: sbc water pump sizing Q's
so is that why my camaro with serpetine system turn the fan clockwise when looking from the back of the motor and my 70 gmc with v belt turns it counter clockwise while looking from the back?

Re: sbc water pump sizing Q's
The direction of rotation is determined by the belt routing. The water pump is turned by the inside edge of a V belt, so it turns clockwise. A serpentine belt turns the water pump by the outside edge of the belt, so it turns counterclockwise.
