Air conditioner removal
Air conditioner removal
Hey guys, so newbie here. Ive tried searching thru the forums and couldnt really find a walkthrough to removing the air conditioning system (I dont have a roof so that will keep me cool). Anyways, as for removing the air compressor, do i really need the air compresser delete pulley thing from gm? couldnt i just remove the compressor then cut the pulley thing?

Re: Air conditioner removal
You'll need the delete pulley. Once you pull the AC, there is nothing to put the belt on. I'm runing the AC delete pulley and the Air pump delete pulley on my 1992 car.
I'm assuming that you have a serpentine belt setup, correct?

run a delete pulley...i got one on ebay for 30 bucks.
after that, take out everything associated with the A/C system. all the hard lines and canisters/condenser etc

If you have the v-belt, just pull that belt off and remove the compressor. No need to cut anything. Pull everything else out.
Condenser - in front of radiator
Accumulator - big aluminum canister thing thats always in the way
Evaporator - connected to the accumulator, inside the black box
Once you've removed all of that, you'll need to buy an AC delete heater box if you ever want your vents to work properly again.
If you have the serp setup (1 big belt), you can remove everything but the compressor until you buy a delete pulley for it. Don't worry about dust getting in there and freezing the compressor. It only spins when the compressor clutch kicks on, which is never if the whole system is removed.

Re: Air conditioner removal
sounds like you need to worry about more than just the ac if your car sits up 2 inches by taking out 40 pounds

my a/c system with condenser, all empty was only 26 lbs. i left the A/c style heater box in there and would like to convert over to the non a/c heater box someday...but i was expecting a 40-50lb loss....it wasnt even close

Your evap has a bit of weight to it, as well as the whole AC box. 2 Inches is somewhat hard to believe, unless you had a little 4 banger. Then a drop of weight would make a big difference.

autozone sells the a/c delete pulley for 24bux and you dont have to pay for shipping from ebay... is the a/c system dead or you just dont need it?
if the compressor still works ill buy it off ya. mine is starting to make some bad clunking noises and pulls my idle down a lot.

Re: Air conditioner removal
I find it alittle interesting that no one mentioned to have the system properly evacuated of refrigerant if it is still in the system...lol

Lol well I was shooting for the common sense thing. I would hope that anyone taking a wrench to an AC system at least knows how it works in general.

Re: Air conditioner removal
Yes, by EPA standards it must be evacuated in order for it not to be illegal pollution.
But why did GM put the hardlines in such PITA places?! I can't stick my arm anywhere without hitting that crap!
