overheating bad???

so i have a 95 firebird formula with the lt1 for a daily driver... it has a 160 thermo in it and it stays at about 165 to 175 when crusing down the high way... but when you pull in to mc donalds to get something to eat the thing heats up to almost 250... my electric fan is on all the time so its not that... what else could it be?

Stay away from McDonald`s. You might check out your thermostat, it may be time to replace it and to service your cooling system if you have`nt done so for awhile. You might want to check between the radiator and condensor for blockage, leaves, dead critters etc. Just curious but how do you know your fan is on all the time? Is it losing any coolant, are you having to add any or has it been low? This time of year and as hot as it is, almost 250 is hotter than I want to run but my `88 Iroc with dual fans will run almost 250 when the conditions are right.

Re: overheating bad???

Yeah, check coolant and if it's brown and dirty, flush it. Also squeeze radiator hose to make sure coolant is getting past thermostat. I'm also wondering how you know both fans are on. Double check. Do you see them going. If none of this helps, then yes, you have something blocking the radiator like leaves, dirt, dead animals, etc. (lol)
