Sounds more like a bad rad cap. The little silver cap on the bottom is what lets water go past into an overflow.when it gets warm, it lets water through so there more room for pressure in the rad, and when it cools water gets let back in.Replace your rad cap first.Usually when your water pump is bad it wont circulate water, or leak.
