ok my car from the previous owner had over heating issues. i bought it and had no problems.

its a 1986 trans am 5.0 v8 automatic TPI

car runs great but they had the fan shorted to be on all the tiem when the key is on

so i disconnect it from time to time to do some electronic stuff in the car or whatever. I'm in the process of putting a switch in the car.

well i stupidly forgot to reconnect it and let the car just run in the garage. i come back like 30mins later to find it spitting coolent all over form over flowing in the coolent resevoir. i turn the car off immediately.

i open teh hood let the steam and heat disapate


i rush to buy more coolent and reconnect the fan

i poor coolent back into the resevoir and turn on the car

starts right up and the engine was already back to factory standard temperatures.

i let it run and cool down.

i reved teh engine later on it sounds fantastic. no change from before the incident.


im wondering if i dodged a bullet and caught it before it did serious damage or if im in for a big surprise?

That's how I got my car, the lower block cracked on the previous owner, they replaced it but never could stop the over heating so sold it. So b4 I'd read this forum I also about lost the car several times so just stuck a Hypertech fan switch in. There are lots better solutions on fan control but a hypertech fan switch is super simple (see the moderator's post on everything you wanted to know about fan control but were afraid to ask). do you have one or two fans?

 

Time will tell. Keep an eye on your oil, look for milky residue on the dip stick or the bottom of the filler cap. Also look for any milky residue when you change your oil. Start checking your coolant for any signs of oil in the coolant. Keep an eye on your rear view mirror for blue smoke. Make sure to hook up your fan/fans to a temp sensor in addition to the fan switch. Most likely you dodged a bullet, lets hope so. I use the factory coolant fan switch in addition to a manual fan switch and it works very well. When I installed a 4th gen dual fan shroud in my `88 Iroc and after-market 12" fans, I forgot to check the rotation of the new fans and a mile down the road my temp gauge was at 260. No problems so far and that was several months ago.

 

yea the gauge was in the read at 280. but like i said i immediately turned off teh car and did everytihng i could and temp went straight down.

its 1 fan. once i get the switch with an led indicator light ill be happy.

and i'll keep an eye out for oil and milky stuff.

Do you have a wiring diagram for your car or do you already know which wires to tap into for the LED and manual fan switch? If you don`t, pm me your e-mail address and I will send you the wiring diagram for your car off a cd I have. It`s not as good as the factory manual but it helps.
