too cold engine?

hey guys,
today i driven at the german higwhay for 1 hour 120mph (2900rpm).
the engine wasnt realy hot at this speed, only 140 °F (60 °C)

when i crouse the engine is too so cold.
only when i make some acclarations the engine comes up to 212 °F (100 °C)

is this normal at 3rd gen fbodys? (have a 91 TA WS6 TBI)

Seems normal. The temp gauge shouldnt jump that high in a few seconds. Any cooling mods?

no i havent any cooling mods -i think, buyed the car used.
i mean wtf the car is only 140 °F when im crusing with 120mph lol.

so i can rev when the engine is only 140 °F ?
heared that the oil is too cold @140 °F for that.

I know these cars drive very warm. It could be your gauge. Stock gauges are famous for whacky readings.

hm you mean that the temp isnt shown correct?
when yes, that would suck because i want remove the speedlimtier because i go often to germany, and i want be safe thats the engine is safe.

Re: too cold engine?

it has alot do do with how cold the air is comming in to the engine.. car runs colder when its cold out side at high speeds... at idle normal operating range 190 -210 or so.. i drove my firebird in 0 degree weather last winter.. only got up to 105 operating temp at 75 mph.. but on the bad side i didn't have a place to work on it in side... so i was not gonna freeze to put a something in front of the radiator to block some of the flow of cold air. since it was my daily driver moving from san diego ca to iowa during the winter was a baaad idea...

Re: too cold engine?

my 92 RS runs down around "180F" or so when im cruising at night [30-40F], according to the stock gauge, but i dont trust the gauge for a second, since it registeres 260+ when my fans come on, which is ~230 at the upper rad hose/top of the radiator.

i would guess that either the gauge is giving false readings, or that the highspeed cruising is causing massive cold air flow over the radiator, thus essentially overcooling, blocking off the front grill or taking off the air dam SHOULD eliminate this, but the car wasnt exactly design to be run @ 120+mph, since the speed limits here in the states are 55-75, i can rarely hit 90, much less cruise @ 125, so im not sure how that effects the motor.

but again my hypothesis would be to much cold air, or a wacky temp gauge.

does the gauge read normal under "standard" conditions [stop and go traffic, or cruing around 65mph?]

Re: too cold engine?

when i drive in the city its 208F.
when i crouse over land, highway (German 120mph @2900 rpm overdrive and Swiss 75 mph @1900rpm overdrive) its arround 150F.

outside arround 60F.

Well its not the Stock Oil cooler (i dont know wich brand..) & filter, the guy wich owned the car before installed a crysler oil filter...

is it save when i make a kickdown when the engine is only 150F? im a little beat in fear that the oil is too cold with 150F.

Re: too cold engine?

I wouldnt worry about your oil being to thick at 150. Besides that is only the temp of the coolant. Have you replaced your thermostat? Maybe it is stuck open or nothing there at all. That would give you low operating temp and high speeds.
