91 5.0 305 Formula Cooling Fan Question

Hey Guys,

New to the boards, thanks for any help in advance. I just bought a 91 third gen formula with a cooling issue... anyway,

The owner previous to whom i bought it from had replaced the factory Fan with a fan out of an old v6 bird, or at least thats the story the great guys I bought the vehicle from, either way,

nothing is hooked up to the stock wires down in the fan dock now, he ran an individual wire to the fuse that is linked to the Temperature gauge going from cool to bi level, to warm etc etc.. so..

in order to turn the fan on I have to have the temp set to bi level, but.. I want to address this preetty much asap, because the Therm is not functioning obvoiusly, and I really don't think this is the most optimal way to have this set up.. so..

can anyone help me with direction on which way to go, the car runs great, but its definitely running hot, and i would rather avoid any damage.. so..

in the stock 91 formula 5.0 was a single fan or dual fan, etc. anyone have any ideas?

Thanks alot!

Gene

That`s a first. I have never heard of anyone doing that but it takes all kinds. You might start by disconnecting the neg. battery cable and then pull the heat/air control unit out where you can see it. If you can do without the car while you fix this, disconnect the wire going to bi level and track it down. I`m not up on `91`s with v-6 so maybe someone who is will reply. For sure you need the wiring diagram for this car if you are doing this yourself. You also do not want to be driving it if it is running hot. There is a lot of good info on the "Search" function at the top of the page on this site about cooling, fans etc. There will be answers to just about everything you could ask. Look around the fan area and see if you can spot any wires not going to anything, they may be the wires you need.

Re: 91 5.0 305 Formula Cooling Fan Question

im not sure how much this will help but i have a 91 RS with the LO3 and i just got thru with cooling fan issue. my issue was the coolant fan switch went bad. what you could do is get a wiring diagram (like from a haynes, chilton etc...) and fix it back to stock the best you can. what i would do (where i come from they call it rednek enginuity) is run a fused lead straight off the battery to the to a relay that is activated by the stock fan switch (located on passenger head between the spark plugs for cyls 6 and 8 (the back two). or in a pinch either run a switch so that you can flick the fan on when you please (cause from what ive heard stock, the fan isnt supposed to kick on till about 235 and doesnt shut off till about 215) or you could wire it off a key on wire so the fan is always on when the car is on. it probably would be a good idea to find out if you have a v8 or 6er fan and get the proper one.
