Driving long time fast without tranny cooler

hey guys

i have simple question,
must i install a tranny cooler when i drive 120mph *crappy speed limiter*.
its possible to acclerate from 60mph to 120mph with just overdrive, no high RPM's.

120mph = 2900 RPM

i driven arround 1 houre or so 120,so long i can, basicly, expect when u must brake because traffic or so, german highways, no speed limit there.

i have a 1991 305 TBI L03 TA WS6, i havent a tranny cooler i think.
its all stock, just new muffler.

The stock tranny "cooler" is merely a loop of bare steel tubing, not multiple passes & finned like you would find in an aftermarket cooler.

It's a steel loop laying under the radiator

As for 120mph REQUIRING an aftermarket cooler...Couldn't hurt?

Summit/Jeg's...Yeah..... http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Like that one. Now, I'm not saying THAT ONE, just using it a reference. I didn't look at how good/bad it was or anything.

If you think the tranny is getting hot, a cooler can't hurt.

If I ever find the B&M one I used to have, it is going on my daily driver car. We don't havethe luxury of the lack of speed limits here....

Re: Driving long time fast without tranny cooler

Transmission coolers are cheap insurance. Very cheap.

As for 120 mph runs? If you're cruising in O/D at 120, I don't think you'll have trouble. It's the constant full throttle romps through the gears and stuck, going nowhere, city traffic jams. (no flow across the radiator, radiator gets hot, radiator doesn't cool transmission fluid as well as it should)

I went for a Long Tru Cool LPD transmission cooler. The best of the best. Stacked plate design instead of tube & fin. And it has the low temp bypass along the top so you don't overcool your fluid.

Since I'm in TX (very hot, very humid), I went for the 11"x12" model. A tight squeeze. Their one size smaller model would be easier to get in there.

No, that's the power steering cooler.

The transmission cooler is inside the passenger side radiator tank.

He's right. Sorry. Don't know what I was thinking, except I have thought about plumbing a fin-style cooler into my power steering loop. I was probably thinking about how I wanted to do that.

To run the tranny cooler, leave the stock one, in the rad, inline & plumb the new one after the stock one.

Re: Driving long time fast without tranny cooler

I prefer to bypass the radiator and run the transmission cooler by itself. The exception being if you live in a cold winter climate.

Re: Driving long time fast without tranny cooler

I'd put a gauge on it first. Too cold can be just as harmful as too hot.
