Fan Problem!! It doesnt turn on till it passes 220 degrees!!! HELP!!

Hi guys,
I have a 91 Camaro RS with the LO3. I put on some TES edlebrocks on it and while installing I broke the fan switch under the header on the passenger side. So i replaced the switch as soon as it broke and the wire going to it the clip was broken off too. so i went to the autoparts store and got the cable with the clip, was i suppose to solder the cable/clip with the stock cable, because I just got both wires and made them tie up to eachother and used electric tape. Ok so before I put on the new clip I had the stock wire still with the metal part stuck inside the new switch. I drove the car for a while with out the clip on the switch and i noticed my car overheated but then i found out that the fan doesnt turn on before reaching the 220 mark which is suppose to and the fan turns on past the 220 mark till it reaches the next mark on the gauge. so yea then when I got the clip and put it on it still did the same the fan turns on all late. So then I was told that my thermostat might be mest up so I checked it and yes It was like broken so i went to the store and bought a 195 thermo which is the stock one so i put it on also drained and added new coolant and guess wat the fan still turns on late. Do you guys think it was the way i wired up the switches cable with the new cable and platic clip or might my water pump been damaged for the overheating. PLZ HELP GUYS. I live in cali. and its been raining and these couple of days it stopped but I want to fix this before the rain comes again which is any time soon. THANX IN ADVANCE.

From,
Edgar

just take the hot wire off the fan and run it to an empty fuse. Take that fuse and run it to a toggle switch and mount it to the left of the faceplate for your radio/ cd player. Run the ground to the toggle and your done! Now you can leave the fan on 24/7 or turn it on at a certain temperature.. much more control. also, i would use a 15 amp fuse for a single fan because it probably draws around 7-10

The stock fan switch in the head is designed to come on at 230 degrees. You should have replaced it with an aftermarket one designed to come on at a lower temperature. Most of those are 185 degrees. You can get an AC Delco one for a Buick Grand National that comes on at 205 degrees, for a lower price than the aftermarket ones. Also, you should have gotten a 160 degree or 180 degree thermostat. That, combined with the lower temp fan switch, will also help your car run cooler than 230 degrees.

oh i see wat u mean, i forgot wat brand the switch was. I never thought about that either thanx. I will try getting a regular spec switch. Thanks for the help. One more thing I would like to know an ACDelco switch will have the same specs as the stock one did right. Thanx again.

An AC Delco fan switch for a thirdgen f-body will have the same as stock specs to come on at 220+ degrees.

The AC Delco fan switch for a Buick Grand National will come on at 205 degrees.

I can't get Buick Grand National to list in the auto parts. Do the other Buicks of the 80's take the same stat?

Summit has a wide variety of single wire 3/8npt switches to choose lower on/offs

After having the original go bad and the fan running all the time to the GM recommended and not running until 234 to this TS135 the fan starts at 204. Perfect!
Seems all that's on the shelf in CA is to run us too hot???

not running until 234
Obviously you're MUCH smarter than me (of course, pretty much everybody is, butt you're even more special than most); are you also smarter than the factory's engineers? You know better than the people that designed the car, how it should work? Do you have any idea WHY they did what they did? IMO (very humble I assure you, especially next to yours) understanding the WHY would be the VERY FIRST STEP in attacking it as "wrong" or whatever it is you're attributing to it. Not saying "they're right"; only, UNDERSTAND WHY before dismissing it as "wrong".

Note that I am NOT saying "the factory is always right"; "what the factory did can't be improved upon"; "always do exactly what the factory says"; or ANYTHING of the kind. NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT. DO NOT put any such words into my mouth (keyboard). What I AM saying is, just exactly WHAT THE HELL do you think is "wrong" with the factory temp settings, and why do you think "CA" has ANYTHING to do with it?? (the same temp switches are listed for our cars in the other 49 states too) Tell us what's so "wrong" about ANY of that. Personally I never had any trouble with it; I got along JUST FINE when I lived out there (don't anymore for reasons having NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with cars), temp switches and all; butt I'm certainly glad that there's people in the world as bright as you. Thanks in advance for bring your wisdom to us inferiors.
