a/c not cooling but heater is heating??

a/c not cooling but heater is heating??
bought the car just before the winter so i didnt bother looking into it since the heater worked and thats all i need in the winter but now i wanna get the a/c working before spring and summertime which gets pretty hot here in TX. the guy i bought it from said that it might need a new compressor because he had tried putting freon and it would work for awhile and then stop cooling again. so i was thinking of taking it to a shop to get it checked out since i dont know a thing about that kind of stuff but just wanted to check with you guys first see if anyone might know what the problem might be.

Even tho you’re going to a shop, education will save $$$$$$ for you.
With refrigerant and soapy water you can locate the leak so you know what to expect.
Some repair shops are 100% honest.
Some are not.
An educated customer cannot be gypped.
