TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
I have a 1990 camaro rs v-8 and the temp gauge doesnt work? What steps can i take to solve the problem? First off i know the water housing needs to be replaced and i think the thermostat is bad,can replacing the thermastat make the temp gauge work? or is there some sort of switch or other part that needs to be replaced?

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
Swaping the thermostat wont fix the temp. On my TPI Z there are 2 temp sensors I remember.
1 is under the throttle body by the therostat housing. A 2 wire plug. That sends a sig to the computer.
The other is on the drivers side of the engine block, below the 3rd plug from the front I believe. A single wire clip. It sends a sig to the temp gauge you see.

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
what color is the one that goes to the gauge?
dose it have a cap on the end of the wire?
I am trying to find mine on a 5.0 to 6.3 swap to keep my stock gauges

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
The wire for the temperature gauge is dark green and the sensor is located in the driver side head between the first two spark plugs.
Hope this helps.

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
I swapped from a tpi 5.0 to a carbed 383 but the heads are early GM style (73' or 74') what is the best place for my temp sender? in the heads somewhere or in the top of the intake by the thermostat? Is the wire still dark green and on the driver side of an 88' TPI?
thanks for all the help

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
Yes, the dark green wire is the same for the '88 TPI system.
Doesn't matter which of the two locations you use for the sensor, they both provide the same temperature reading (well, plus minus a degree or two, but it's an idiot gauge anyway).
It's gonna be a screamer. I just wish you had stayed with computer control. But hey, it's your car.

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
Here is what you are looking for:

Notice the position of it relative to the fuel lines and AIR tubes coming out of the exhaust headers. It's hard to miss if you look.
This picture was taken only days after I bought my car and the wire for the temp sender was actually melting from being too close to the headers and the end that clipped on the sender itself was holding on by only 1 braid. A poorly maintained engine bay can wreak havoc on things like this so that's what I'd check first. Idiot I bought the car from even had the courtesy of forgetting to reconnect the oil pressure sender

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
If you unplug it, the gauge should read full cold. If you ground it, the gauge should peg to full hot.
With the key on, of course.
Hope this helps.

Re: TEMP. GAUGE NOT WORKING??
Ok thanks ill look for it this weekend when i am replacing my new piece of junk holly blue fuel pump never buy one!!!!
I has less than 50 mi on it and its dead!
I think im gonna go with a walboro 255 in tank and rerun my fuel line
will that pump work with a demon 750?
What regulator do i need? the holley one i have has an 8an inlet and 2 6an outlets will the second 6an outlet work for a return or will it cause too much pressure on the carb side if i splice it in to the stock fuel lines at the tank and use a step down fitting so i can use the stock pickup?
