Is there any harm in hooking up a potentiometer to fan circuit?

This is sort-of car related. I'm using my old electric 16" fan that was originally on my '89 as an exhaust fan for my 7'x3'x3' sand blasting booth I'm building. I want to be able to control the air flow as much as possible. I'm going to be using a 12V battery more than likely, if it becomes a hassle I'll just buy an inverter. But either way, I'm wiring in a relay as well just like you would on a car, but I also want to put a potentiometer in between the positive on the fan and the relay. I was just curious of most pots could handle that kind of load. ANy ideas?

NO HARM, NO FAN

There is no harm.

However the size of the potentiometer would be quite large.

Use a solid-state controller.

Fog lights are not driving lights. They look dorky. Turn em off slow pokes.

How bout those dorks too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime!
