Fans Turn on sooner

Is the fan on my 86 camaro with tpi controlled by a switch on the passenger side head or is it turned on by the computer? If it is a switch on the passenger side head which switch should i get to make it turn on sooner?
I put a new 180* t stat in and found that it had a 160* in it, but it stays cool on the highway, only in the city and in traffic it starts to heat up and the gauge go's up almost to the red zone than goes down to 220 once the fan turns on. Everything in the cooling system is new, radiator, heater core, hoses, coolant changed 3 times and is a nice green color.

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

i found the acdelco switch that turns the fans on at 215 and off at 200 so i will see if that will cool it off better then the stock switch.

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

You can also get a Hypertech switch that turns on at 200 and off at 180. They sell them online at Summit or Jegs. Most other places carry them too. I put one in my car and the temp never goes past 200. Btw, I have a 180 thermostat in my car.

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

Well after work today i picked up the new fan switch. I got home and was looking where to install it... My car doesn't have a fan switch there??? and there is no wires to ever indicate that one was ever there. The fan does come on when the temp gauge goes over 220 by a bit. So is the fan turn on totally controlled by the ecm? btw this is a california car if that makes a difference?

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

86 i THINK is controlled by the ecm if it's single fan dual fans there should be a sensor for 1 fan in the head but very rare to dual fans in 86

Yes, or you can just add a switch into the system and have a manual over-ride.

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

I bought this.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-890015/

Installed into passenger side head and am good to go. I have the stock fan wiring tucked away, until I can either tune it out or hook up another fan later on, when I need it, as I only have a single fan.

-Take care

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

I was thinking of just adding another relay and still leave the stock one connected so it will still come on incase i forget to turn it on or when the ac is on.

Today in stop and go traffic the gauge went up very close to the red zone so i cranked the heat and it didn't go down very much, but even when i got going out of the traffic doing 60mph it only went down to 220, and i have a 180* thermostat?? The air dam is there and looks fine and the radiator is brand new and is still clean inside, the only thing i can think of is that when the cap was loose from me accidentally not getting it on all the way and then having that come off and the car overheated (gauge pegged) and lost most of the coolant, that the thermostat is probably bad? Also i just filled it back up the rest of the way with water because i was at work, so it is mostly water, but it is still a little bit green. So i will get a new 180 and drill four holes in it, refill with 50/50 antifreeze, and see what that does.

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

i put a manual fan switch on there and it now stays nice and cool and the ac is nice and cold right away when i turn it on.

Re: Fans Turn on sooner

Is there anything special you have to do to bypass the fan wiring to hook up a manual switch? Or just cut them and add a fuse and switch?

There is no need to bypass anything. Just tie a manual switch to ground for the relay(s) into the existing relay ground wire(s).
