A/C won't even turn on
A/C won't even turn on
I have a 1991 camaro Z28 with a 5.7 TPI. I am having trouble getting the A/C to work. Nothing works, I can't even get the vent to come on and blow air. I don't even know where to start cause I have never messed with it before. I did check the fuse and it was fine. Any ideas on what I can try?

when you try to start it in the a/c position, does your compressor clutch kick in (under the hood)? There is more than 1 fuse... 1 for the a/c clutch and one for the blower (I think I remember that right). If the clutch comes on, it's the blower fuse. If NOTHING comes on, it could still be the blower fuse that powers a relay for the a/c clutch.
Did you check both the a/c fuse AND the heater fuse... hold on.
OK looked at my chilton's and it only shows one fuse for the heat/ a/c, but I'm pretty sure that there is another one (possibly a cartridge-style fusible link?) under the hood, and a relay for the clutch.
Are you sure the blower motor is plugged in under the hood and free of corrosion etc.?
Just my 2 cents.

I have a 91 and there is a resistor in line for power for the compressor, it goes bad and then it doesn't turn on.... Check that too...

I am having trouble getting the A/C to work. Nothing works, I can't even get the vent to come on and blow air.
A start would to be to test if there is voltage at the blower motor (key on, hvac controls on vent, switch low through hi speeds). If you have voltage but no blower, it's a bad motor.
If you have no voltage at the blower at all (high speed is powered separate from the lower 3 speeds), then you need to check the HTR A/C 25A fuse. If that is good, there may be a problem with the fan speed switch on the hvac controls.
If you get high speed only, the resistor pack on the air box has went bad.
OK looked at my Chilton's and it only shows one fuse for the heat/ a/c, but I'm pretty sure that there is another one (possibly a cartridge-style fusible link?) under the hood, and a relay for the clutch.
Re: A/C won't even turn on
Thanks. I checked the a/c blower motor voltage when it was turned on and it was 12.5 V so I was getting voltage. But here is where it gets even more confusing. I bought a new motor plugged it in outside the housing and the motor turned on when I turned it on, but when I put it in the housing and plugged it in again it would come on and I checked the voltage and its still 12.5 V. So I thought that maybe it was somehow binding up, but there is a hole is the motor where a vent tube comes in, and I spun it through the hole and it spins freely. I guess I'm going to have to pull the motor out and try another one maybe.
