Hey guys. I recently noticed some coolant on the driver's side floormat of my 85 z28. Its coming in from just right of my right foot, somewhere above my foot. I reach up there and I don't feel anything but wires.

I read that most heater core leaks show up on the passenger side floor. Could mine be something different? A problem with the heater hoses maybe? Something else?

I plan to pick up a new heater core and attack from the passenger side. But if I don't feel anything wetness there I guess I'll start ripping apart the driver's side.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

Sounds like the leak is small, in the heater core, but has managed to get into the ventalation duct work. If the leak is up high in the core near the air outlet, it will travel as a mist thru the low foot ducts, condensing as it travels then dripping out.

I'm going to tear things apart this weekend and check it out. One thing I noticed is that the rubber over the firewall feels a bit like a waterbed when I poke it. I'm praying that thing isn't holding a bunch of coolant behind it.

 

Are you sure its coolant/antifreeze thats leaking?
If so:
Just take off the right side underdash hush panel (cover) and then take off the
piece of heater/ac ductwork and expose your heater core and have
a look see if its leaking.

I bought one from sanels, and it didn't fit right. Bought another aluminum one off the internet, still not the right fit. Go with the copper one if you want the exact fit, even though all the aluminum ones say they'll fit, they won't.

Thanks for the info guys. Before checking back with this thread I went and changed it this weekend. I happened to buy a copper one from Advance Auto that fit pretty well.

It was my old heater core leaking. I checked the passenger side and there was a pond under the floor mat. So I got that swapped out with new hoses and things are back to normal. Except for slimey carpet.

I'd say it took me a good 3 hours or more.

 

I should say, I think dirtywhite was right about the coolant traveling through the ductwork to get to the driver's side.
