Hooking up A/C. Advice needed.

Okay guys im finaly getting around to hooking up my a/c.

I have a 91 camaro with an LT1 swapped in and the corvette serpentine set up. I already have my a/c lines and fittings, my question is what else needs to be done to the system before i hook it up and charge it?

I already planned on replacing the dryer and orifice tube, but i dont know how to replace the orifice tube or even where it is. Any help? Any other advice? Thanks!

Re: Hooking up A/C. Advice needed.

It's in the line next to the Evap. coil. Some of the time you have to cut the old one out and replace it with a crimp-on fitting. Just look below the high side connection on your Evap. coil for a dimple in the line. That holds the orifice in place. If you can replace the orifice then all you'll need to do is pull it out with a needle nose. If the system has been open for sometime flush the system both ways in case you have some bugs to crawl up into the lines.

Don't forget to vacuum the system before putting refrigerant and oil in.

You can go to any auto parts store and buy a flush kit. It will come with the flush and oil to replace what you need in the system. you just blow it thru with an air line 60/90 lbs will be fine of air pressure.

can i do this flush with all the componets hooked up?

I found some metal shavings by the orifice tube, what could that be from? This a/c system hasnt ran in 2 years since the new engine has been swapped in.
Does 134 requre an oil or is it combined with the refridgerant?

No, you don’t want the flush chemical to get in the compressor or accumulator.

A small amount of shavings is from normal compressor wear.

Four ounces of PAG oil should be poured into the compressor the ROTATED BY HAND for several revolutions in the direction of operation.

134 comes with and without oil.

If you get it without add four ounces to the rest of the system which gives you a total of eight ounces.

134 refrigerant comes mixed with various proportions of oil.

You must do the math to make sure your system winds up with eight ounces total.

Re: The Kool Rool

Thanks that helps alot!

Really after i evacuate it and verify that it has no leaks and will hold a vaccum all there left to do is to check if i have it wired right. I know the compressor won't engage unless there is a charge on the stystem, and i also know you are supposed to run the compressor while you are charging the system. So how to i know if i have the wiring right? is there a wire i can check to see if i have voltage to when my ac switches are on or something of that nature?

Thanks.

Charge Account

Install half a charge into the system.

Start the car and turn the HVAC to MAX COOL.

If the compressor won’t come shut the car off and temporarily jump the low pressure switch.

Then start the car and turn the HVAC to MAX COOL and add the remainder of the charge.
