coolant fan switch

I've been searching around and can't seem to find a low temp coolant fan switch. I'd like for it to thread into the head, kick on around 180deg, and shut off around 160/165. Any one know of an AcDelco, echlin or other type? I don't want an adjustable.

Re: coolant fan switch

I vaguely remember reading somewhere , maybe another forum?, something about a fan switch for some year Corvette that would fit and work at a lower temp? No idea how much cooler, but if you run out of ideas try checking that out. Who knows??

I needed something a bit colder. I just ordered a probe type from derale. comes on at 180, turns off at 170.

Not exactly what your asking, but a fair compromise.

I think that's as close as it gets. I'll pick one up and shave it. maybe it will activate the switch sooner.

Re: coolant fan switch

I bought mine from a corvette online sales place. It was 195/185 I believe, which is what you need for a 170* thermostat. I want to say it was midwest corvette, or something along those lines
Here we go
http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette?frame=1.944
They say on at 200, off at 185. You gotta realize, there's some margin of error in those numbers. You need your t-stat to be WIDE OPEN, long before your fan comes on, or else you'll get stuck with your fan running all the time to try to keep it cold enough to close the t-stat (a hopeless endeavour).

Plus, you don't actually want to run any cooler then 170* or so, or you'll just sludge up your oil really fast.

Re: coolant fan switch

that happened to me with the 195/185 on/off, combined with the 180 t-stat, the fan would run all the time once on.

I went with the 210/200 and 180 t-stat. Recycled the 195/185 in a car of a friend that had a 160 or 170 t-stat.

OMG guys, very simple.....

Hypertech Cool Fan Switch...
#4026 On at 176* Off at 166* You will need to change out stock t-stat and R/R with lower stat, (160*-170*)

You could even try Ebay or Summit too see whats out there for our cars!

Re: coolant fan switch

OMG to you too chat monkey - that hypertech switch wouldn't work. Your fan would be running all the time (on the highway, etc). It'd never switch off, because it could never cool the engine below the full opening point of the thermostat.

You could use that if you pulled your thermostat perhaps, and had a great cooling system, but why bother? Running your engine that cold just makes you sludge up your oil faster, and burn more fuel because it's always too cold. The whole "colder is better" trend can be taken too far.... A cold air intake is fine, but don't run your engine below a reasonable operating temperature.

My car is running fine with the 160 deg thermostat and a 170off/180on switch. Its a derale that most places have to order, never on the shelf. I was just looking to find a stock application to purchase at a local auto part store-for quick replacement.

As for my oil sludging up, maybe on regular oil. I haven't had that problem with synthetic. Fuel mileage, I haven't seen a loss. Then again, this whole situation is for another car, a 1960's Ford Ranchero. 351w with a 2 barrel. Its getting hot, 190-200. The car doesn't run well at that temp. It runs best at 165-175.

So, thanks to everyone. Problem has been solved.

The org poster asked for "a low temp coolant fan switch. I'd like for it to thread into the head, kick on around 180deg, and shut off around 160/165."-monkihead. And thats pretty much spec with the Hypertech's 4026. Thats what he/she is asking for, and thats my awnser.

Try paying attention to the needs of others!

BTW, the fan does turn off on highway.
