A/C compressor options?

Well, after 24 years, I think the compressor in my '86 is toast. My uncle's shop recharged and converted it to R134, and I got it back today. Drove it around for 50 miles in nice cool comfort, when I started hearing a shriek and getting smoke from under the hood

I turned off the A/C, naturally, as I assumed that was the issue. I got home, turned it back on, and saw a little more smoke and saw the compressor stop turning while it appeared the belt still moved. I assume I need a new compressor clutch? I can't imagine its a problem with belt tension, seeing as how I drove it 50 miles with the A/C on with no issue.

This car probably didn't have the A/C used for 15 years (car only has 31k on it now, didn't work when I got it 4 months ago)...I think its safe to say the compressor is shot, no?

Compressor Needs A Compress

The clutch is functioning.

The compressor has seized.

At 24 years old I would replace it.

So now the question is do you want the same shop to fix the AC or do you want a different shop or do it yourself.

Happy Racing!
