AC problem
AC problem
This isn't about my Camaro, but I need help with my AC. I've moved to Texas where it is HOTTT!!!!!! Right after I got here, my 1998 Silverado's original, tired and worn out AC system couldn't keep up with the heat. I've replaced everything except the evaporator and have had it recharged, and am pretty confident the charge is correct and full. Now it makes some pretty good cold air but I still have problems.
When stuck in traffic or stopped, and sometimes even at highway speeds on a long run in high heat, the AC will just shut down. I thought at first it was icing up, but opening the hood and looking at the high and low side aluminum "can" looking things off the AC manifold/hoses, they are just sweating and not frosted. Nothing really looks to be freezing up.
But the blower will slow down to nothing and the air quits flowing. Sometimes when this happens you can't even get the light in the AC ON button to light up. After turning everything off, after a while things will start up again. But sometimes at what seems to be a lower level of performance.
I've been wondering if there is a vaccuum problem with shifting the doors in the air passages under the dashboard. But when I turn the AC off to let it sort of "reset", I can hear a vaccuum door "thump" when things go back to vent mode. And the air blows pretty cold in vent mode for a short time until things warm back up to outside ambient temperature.
I was also wondering if there might be a bad switch shutting something down somewhere. There are switch-looking things on the dryer cannister and I think on the back of the compressor or somewhere close by. Is one or both of these a safety switch?
