rookie ?

I might be asking a rookie ? but I have a instr. cluster that appearantly has been cut and put back together and i have a ?

The temp gauge quit when some wires got pulled apart. I put in a new brake light switch and appearantly the POwner had cut trhe wires to the temp gauge and used a different color wire to patch it and didn't use any kind of connectors just twisted the wires. well now I don't know what wire they used or if it will work correctly so. Should I trace the sensor wire from under the hood and until I get under the dash and then take the instr. cluster and to under the dash? or how hard is it to hook up an aftermarket gauge and bolt it some where?

I would really prefer to stay stock if possible.

Re: rookie ?

Coolant temp guage wire will be dark green - should see it come out of the connector in the driver footwell and be able to follow to to whatever color the PO changed it to.

Here;s wiring diags for just about everything to help: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

Re: rookie ?

Ima dummy!!!!!!!! I appreciate the help but I unhooked the sensor and took the connector end from the frame of car and then took off the plastic cover of the instrument panel the needle was stuck behind the panel i turned on the switch and grounded the green wire and the needle pegged. So there can't be a broken connection. if it was the signal from the ground would not move the needle. So I'm guessing the prob. is the sensor. thank you.
