1990 Single Cooling Fan Help

Ok i know the information is here and there are alot of knowledgeable guys here! I have been searching for 3 days now and cant put it togther! lol
I have a 1990 Camaro 5.0 rs single cooling fan! Didint have any problems with it till i sat in traffic the other day for 45 min and it hasnt worked since! The car didnt over heat! the fan worked for most part i was sitting! turned car off and started and fan never came back on but was moving so it keep it cool!
I figured i burned the relay up so i replaced it! nothing! My dad tried to help me put a switch in with relay to trick it but not sure its right! He said put switch in brown wire to 12 V keyed power so that when you turn key off fan goes off! (so u cant leave it on) lol nothing!
I am confused as to what to do! does the relay work off a ground? or 12 V power? I want to put it like my dad says so i dont run battery down but just cant figure out!
I also took wire off of head switch and grounded to base of swich and head! nothing!
I tried the Ac on on max cold and it didnt come on!
I put 12 v directly to wire harness realy plug and fan came on!
What would make it not come on with ac on and new relay?
I figure if it was fan switch it should still come on when ac on?
I dont know though!
I dont know where the fusible link is to check it either! Anyone know where it is?
I just want to say i have had this car for almost 5 years and the thing doesnt have maybe 8000 miles on rebuilt motor! I love the car but just cant keep it on the road! Im tryin hard to!
I appericate all the help i can get! i would love to be able to drive this car more!
Thanks
Ivon

Re: 1990 Single Cooling Fan Help

First thing is to hook up 12v directly to the fan to make sure it's still good. Then work back from there. If the fan is good unplug the harness from the relay and jump from batt +ve to the fan wire (blk/red?). If that works jump from the red (always hot) wire in the connector to the fan wire. If that works those two wires and fan are good. Then start the car and check you have 12v at the smaller brown wire (hot in run). If that's good it's probably the relay. To check plug the connector back into the relay and jump from the small green/wht (trigger) wire to ground. You can push a small needle through the wire to do this. If this all works then it's probably either the sensor or ecu. Hope it's the sensor. If you want an override switch splice to the trigger wire then to the switch then to ground.

The direct battery test will work to determine if the fan motor works. You can also test it by disconnecting the wiring connection and putting an ohm meter across it to see if the loop is open or closed. If the needle doesnt move, bad. Replace the $25. fan motor.

Don't bother, the relay is already +12v keyed on at the brown wire. The green/white (ground) wire to the temperature switch is the controlling wire for the relay.
I also took wire off of head switch and grounded to base of swich and head! nothing! I tried the Ac on on max cold and it didn't come on!
Can you hear the relay switching ('click!') when you do that ? If the relay makes a switching noise, keyed +12v to switch it is present (under dash fuse is good) and you have a +12v from the battery issue.
I put 12 v directly to wire harness relay plug and fan came on!
The Blk/red wire goes to the fan, applying +12v to this on the plug will power the fan. It (the fan) runs, the fan is good and so it the wiring.
What would make it not come on with ac on and new relay?
The same thing the keeps it from not working with the A/C off
I figure if it was fan switch it should still come on when ac on?
It should.
I dont know where the fusible link is to check it either! Anyone know where it is?
Should be on a junction block, on the firewall, at the battery.
Kind of just restating what's already been said by the other two guys.

No need to start the engine to test for keyed on power.
If this all works then it's probably either the sensor or ecu.
TBI is only (temperature) controlled by the fan switch in the passenger head.

Re: 1990 Single Cooling Fan Help

Ok as i said b4 i bought a new relay! Bad! My dad and i spent another hour looking at it! When I just gave up and switched the relays that are mounted side by side to each other! and bam the fan worked! So now i have to go get another relay! We tried to hook it to 12v and see if it would click and it never did! So there is a little proof that you can buy a new (bad) electrical part!
Thank you to the guys that posted! i appericate your Help!

I have a friend who had to go through 5 new HEI coils before he finally got one that worked (number 6). So yeah, "new" parts can be bad right out of the box...
