Stupid Question (Re: Electric Fan)...

Can someone here please explain to me the function of the "fan relay"?
I am also wondering how you guys wire up an electric fan in a third-gen that was not originally equipped with one...

Re: Stupid Question (Re: Electric Fan)...

A relay is a switching device that handles heavier currents than smaller switches can handle. When the small switch attached to the relay is flipped it lets current flow through an electromagnet inside the relay. The magnet pulls the heavy duty contacts together to power whatever device it's attached to. Anything that draws a large current (fan, headlight etc.) normally uses a relay. If your car never had an electric fan you'll need a fan, a relay and a thermostatic switch. Maybe all in one kit? The thermo switch may be inserted into the top heater hose and will activate the relay which will turn on the fan at the set temperature.
