bad compressor??

my ac compressor motor is making a whining/grinding sound would that be the thrust bearing or the whole unit that's bad? and would i be able to jut take off the compressor belt and drive the car around with no problems on the power steering pump because it has two belts???

Re: bad compressor??

Ok well if the system is not turned on. Either as A/c or defrost and it is making noise, it could be a bad bearing on the front compressor pulley or the clutch could be bad. On an 86 you have three belts, but you say you only have two. So you can remove your a/c belt as long as it doesnt affect your other accesories from turning. Meaning if all it turns is the a/c then go right ahead. But you gotta have a belt on your alternator and water pump to run and drive still. And w/o one on your power steering it will not be fun either.

Re: bad compressor??

no i mean there are two belts on the power steering pump, and on an 86 there are four belts one to the power steering pump and one to the ac compressor that wraps around the power steering pump then the main belt then the A.I.R belt, well, three if you don't have the a.i.r thing

Re: bad compressor??

So if you lose the belt that shares with the a/c. You will still have a belt running the p/s. You will be fine
