170 stat

Does anyone know where to get a 170 high flowing stat? Spring is here in Arkansas and it gets Africa hot and I can't find anything but 195 and a few 180 stats here but 170 is supposed to be the best all around and I can't find one. Some are supposed to be high flowing but that may be a marketing gimmick. Thanks in advance.

Re: 170 stat

Lower temperature thermostats don't improve cooling. They only set the minimum temperature the engine can maintain at steady state. If the rest of the cooling system isn't up to the task of maintaining the engine at 170, it'll keep climbing anyway. If your engine gets hotter than 195 now, its not the thermostat's fault.

The best way to get the engine to run cooler is to turn the fans on sooner.

Stick with 185 stat and it will work fine. going lower is just cause problems with the ECM. If you are running hot, it is not the thermostat.

Re: 170 stat

I have a be cool radiator and a low temp fan switch but the car is not complete yet. I have to get a chip burned for it and I have heard that a 170 is the best for performance and still have a heater. So when I can find someone to do me chip for my 92 Z convertible I want it for a 355ci, 30lb injectors, holley stealth ram, brodix heads, all forged internals, 2210 headers, 700r4, 327 gears and a cam I haven't decided on yet. It shouldnt run hot with the good radiator and a chip made for 170. I want a good street driveable cam like a lt4 hot cam or a little bigger but chip friendly.

GM part# 10220957. It's $7.89 right now at www.gmpartsdirect.com. It's a 170* from a late model S10 Blazer I believe. I run these in my engine with a low temp fan switch and my engine runs at about 180-185. This thermostat will NOT have any effect on the ECM as stated elsewhere.

Re: 170 stat

With the air dam intact, every stock thirdgen I've owned has run around 180* on the factory gauge. The only time it goes higher is when the car is sitting idling at a stop, until the fans come on. Lowering the fan temp would fix that, but it's never been enough of an issue to me to make it a priority.

If you have an overheating problem, a lower temp thermostat isn't going to fix it. If you really want a 170* thermostat, there's a tech article, used to be a sticky (https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...total-fan.html), with a GM part number for a 170* stat.

Stewart sells high-flow ones. I bought a high flow 160* for mine (carb).
